Simply set in sand at the Portland Flower Show earlier this year. Originally observed and photographed by katyelliot; found via materialicious.

I've seen wood rounds used just as path pavers, and yes, they were slippery when wet. Some sand mixed into a preservative varnish might do the trick? The small diameter slices would definitely be prone to wiggling. Probably using thicker slices so that all the sizes extended more deeply into the sand would help with stability.
